I recently photographed my very first newborn session in my new studio space, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out! I’ve been making some changes to my newborn photography style lately, and this session was exactly what I had been envisioning.
Lots of whites and soft neutrals, beautiful natural light, simple setups, and a more organic, relaxed approach to posing. I still love those sweet, sleepy newborn photos, but I’m finding myself drawn more and more to images that feel natural and timeless. Less fuss, fewer props, and more focus on the baby and all those tiny details that change so quickly.
And I have to say, I’m really loving this refreshed look!
A Familiar Family and Their Third Baby
One of my favorite things about being a newborn photographer is getting to see families grow. I photographed this family’s second baby girl a few years ago, so I was thrilled when they reached out to let me know they were expecting their third baby, another little girl!
Even sweeter, they made the drive all the way from San Francisco to my newborn photography studio in Moraga.
Anyone who has ever tried to get out of the house with a newborn knows that it’s no small accomplishment. Add two older children to the mix, and it’s practically an Olympic event! There are feedings, diaper changes, getting everyone dressed, and somehow managing to get yourself ready too.
But this mama made it happen, and she looked absolutely beautiful.
Moms Need to Be in the Photos, Too
One thing I really wanted to make sure of during this session was getting plenty of photographs of mom with her newest little girl.
As moms, we’re so often the ones taking the pictures. We have hundreds of photos of our children sleeping, smiling, playing, and growing, but somehow we’re barely in any of them.
And I think that’s such a shame.
I know how easy it is to put off being photographed, especially right after having a baby. You’re tired, your body is still recovering, and you might not feel quite like yourself yet. But I promise, your children aren’t going to look back at these photographs someday and notice any of those things.
They’re going to see their mom holding them, loving them, and looking at them like they’re the most wonderful little person in the world.
That’s why I always encourage moms to get in front of the camera, even if they originally planned on having photos of just the baby.
I know these three children are going to treasure the photographs of their beautiful mama one day.
Loving This New Chapter of Newborn Photography
After 17 years of photographing newborns, it’s been so much fun to refresh my studio and explore a slightly different style.
My new space is filled with soft, natural light, and I’m keeping everything simple with whites, creams, and neutral textures. I want the focus to be on your baby, those sweet little expressions, and the connection between family members rather than elaborate props or complicated poses.
Of course, every baby is different, and I still gently guide and pose them when needed. But I’m loving the more relaxed feel of these sessions and letting those natural little moments happen.
This sweet family was the perfect way to begin this new chapter, and I’m so grateful they trusted me again with another one of their babies.
